Mission Statement
We the people of St. Vincent de Paul are an international lay
Catholic organization of men and women working to reflect the life of Jesus in
service to others. We are supported by volunteers and donors from various
religions and walks of life.
We provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support for the
needy and alienated, and for each other.
We are united in a Society of charity, nourished by
prayer and reflection. We witness God's love by works of charity and
justice. We make no distinction in those we serve because in them we see
the face of Jesus Christ.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society was founded in Paris,
France in 1883 by a young law student, Frederic Ozanam, and several colleagues
to help the poor and destitute of Paris. The society grew rapidly into an
international volunteer movement to help the poor. By the year 2000, local
chapters were operating in 130 countries, supported by over 900,000 members.
Though the Society’s name is recognized around the world, each council is
locally organized, funded and staffed for the purpose of helping our neighbors
in need. Our local council has no financial connection or obligations to any
other organization, church or institution. We serve all who come regardless of
race, creed or ethnic origin.
The Rogue Valley District Council of the St. Vincent
de Paul Society was established in 1982 to serve the poor and needy in Jackson
County. Approximately 220 part-time volunteers provide all staffing and
services—almost 70,000 volunteer hours last year—we
have no paid employees. Funding is derived from church poor boxes, special
church collections, direct mail appeals, fundraising dinners and auctions,
direct cash donations, grants from foundations, non-cash donations of food,
clothing, household items, donated automobiles, and through sales from our
Thrift Store.
The facility consists of buildings on nearly three acres of land,
centrally located at 2424 North Pacific Highway in Medford Oregon. The main
building has been renovated and contains the Dining Room/Kitchen, Food Pantry
and Social Services offices (16,240 square feet). Our Thrift Store and Warehouse
moved into our new building 16,000 square foot building during 2006. Our Shelter
provides emergency family housing in our permanent facility, completed during
2007.
